You Don't Want To Miss Travis Scott's New Triple-Threat Nikes
When it comes to high-wattage partnerships, the Swoosh continues to set the standard. Earlier this summer, Virgil Abloh revealed Air Force 1s for Louis Vuitton, bringing the worlds of streetwear, sneakers, and high couture together in one neat package. (In addition, the designer has just released a staggering 50 pairs of Nike Dunks.) Another major Nike collaboration is on the way, and it features two hugely important but vastly different designers: cultural stalwart Travis Scott and streetwear genius Hiroshi Fujiwara. And it's not only a single pair of as desirable as they come kicks, but also a selection of clothing.
Travis Scott is a rapper from the United States. Nikes have proved to be one of the most popular and in-demand partnerships right now. And Hiroshi Fujiwara and his Fragment Design label have been in the Swoosh stable for decades, dating back to 2010, when the Japanese designer placed his iconic bolt emblem on a Nike Tennis Classic. Bringing the two together is crucial and makes sense: Scott is a student of Kanye West's shoe design school, and West is a longstanding fan of Fujiwara's. It's a partnership spanning generations of streetwear culture and shoe design—as Nike puts it, "three heads are better than one."
The three collaborated on the Air Jordan 1 Low, riffing on a similar color scheme but adding Scott's now-signature reverse Swoosh and Fragment's unique shade of blue. A sweatshirt, short-sleeve top, and shorts complete the look with a jumbled design that combines a Michael Jordan picture and company logos with a scribbly Dada-ist aesthetic.
There is an unrivaled frenzy surrounding any Travis Scott Nikes. Simply said, the megastar has the golden touch that transforms any endeavor into one that will draw hordes of crazed sneakerheads. Fujiwara and Fragment Design produce a calmer form of excitement, one that sells out quickly but may not elicit the same emotion as Scott. The fact that these two forces—two opposing sides of the hyped streetwear coin—have joined under a single partnership is unquestionably historic.
