BEAMS Gives Adidas' 1984 Olympic Sneakers A Fresh New Look
Adidas is commemorating the Olympics with a throwback, releasing a collection of retro models from the 1984 Los Angeles Games, the same year it introduced its Forum sneaker and its iconic “Spirit of the Games” campaign. In order to commemorate the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as well as Adidas' glory days, Japanese retailer BEAMS has remixed the '80s sneakers.
Adidas went all out on thematic designs to commemorate (and profit from) the 1984 Games, which also marked the brand's first year as an Olympic sponsor. After all, the 1980s were the era of Americana, Bruce Springsteen, and national pride, all of which have been sorely lacking in recent years. Nonetheless, consumers enjoy a good retro runner, and Adidas will most likely profit from its ‘80s style if nothing else.
The “Spirit of the Games” running sneaker is the highlight of the brand's retro Olympic capsule, both today and when it debuted in 1984. The shoe, which was previously available in low and mid-top versions, has a sleek, minimalist design that resembles Adidas' classic ZX silhouettes and has remained true to its original makeup with a few updates. BEAMS assisted in reworking the orthopedic-looking sneaker into a chic iteration that proclaims, "I'm not your average grandpa, I'm a cool grandpa".
BEAMS' three Spirit of the Games sneakers, all in white leather, come in a variety of styles, including regular laces, no laces, and velcro straps — each of which could be dressed up with a velour tracksuit or chinos. BEAMS, on the other hand, has styled its reworked Adidas kicks with pinstripe slacks, ‘80s-style jeans, and extra-long shorts, doubling down on the cool grandpa look.
To honor the "Spirit of the Games," each sneaker has its name written on the lateral side, though the detail is barely visible due to the tonal finish. If you wore these shoes after the Olympics, we doubt anyone would notice the theme; instead, they'd be mesmerized by their retro makeup.
Whether you're rooting for America, Japan, or simply using the Olympics as an excuse to party, these shoes are a stylish way to commemorate the occasion. All three Spirit of the Games sneakers are now available on BEAMS' Japan website, but you'll need to use a proxy service to get them unless you have connections at the Tokyo Olympic Village.
