Nike Takes Us Back To The Y2K With Its Iconic Hello Kitty Sneaker

Hello Kitty, another Y2K icon, is making a comeback in streetwear. Sanrio's renowned character is getting a second chance to remix Nike's Air Presto, resurrecting the elusive 2004 partnership that never saw a broad release.

The 2004 Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto was one of the most specialized but elusive drops of the 2000s, because there was never truly a drop following the shoe's buzzy press run. The high-profile collaboration ended up as an extremely limited “friends and family” distribution, despite the fact that it was meant to be a limited run of 500 pairs in four color schemes. Only 12 pairs of each style are said to have ever left the factory. This isn't a sneaker that's gotten a lot of buzz because of ridiculously high resale pricing; in fact, you won't find it on the resale market at all. Now, 17 years later, a new generation of sneakerheads is giving the vintage style a second shot.

The design of the sneaker itself is a significant question mark; no images of the forthcoming retro have been revealed thus far. While the 2004 Air Presto (seen above) had Hello Kitty's traditional logo and color scheme, it's uncertain if this throwback will. Steven Smith, who worked on Nike's original Hello Kitty collaboration, currently oversees footwear design for Kanye West's Yeezy brand with Adidas, and it's unlikely he'll cross the competition line for this throwback. Due to the fact that the 2004 original was never extensively distributed, even an unaltered re-release would generate a lot of interest among collectors and Hello Kitty enthusiasts.

Although an official release date has yet to be determined, the Nike x Hello Kitty Air Presto is likely to enter stores during the Christmas season of 2021.
