Something Old And Something New In New Balance's Long-Awaited Sneaker
Charlotte Lee has been tapped by New Balance to develop a brand-new silhouette. Lee has struck another home run with the upcoming XC-72, following outstanding work on the relatively recent 237 and 327. The sneaker was first shown in NB collaborator Casablanca's FW21 collection, but the much-anticipated shoe will soon be released in a rainbow inline hue.
We have a clearer, more comprehensive look at the XC-72 thanks to official pictures. The XC-72 is set to debut this autumn with suggested retail cost ranging from $100 to $130. The shoe, like the 237 and 327, is primarily influenced by 1970s running footwear, with a nylon top and many suede sections. The heel clip and outsole, in particular, draw instant attention to the shape, with the former featuring a textured, rubberized construction and the latter featuring a prominent tread pattern that continues up to the toe.
“The XC-72 is the physical embodiment of retro-futurism,” said Lee. “As with the 327, I asked myself ‘if I was a designer in the 70’s what would I create as New Balance’s concept car?’. I took inspiration and specific elements from the past and reimagined them for today’s consumer. This methodology creates a timeless design that we hope will be reimagined, yet again, in another 40 years.”
In terms of the coloring, the "Multicolor" XC-72 gives off strong Two-Face vibes, which is a good thing. The pastel colors definitely help the shape stand out even more, and we expect this one to be in great demand on release day.
