Chrome Hearts Is Customizing Dunks Now, Not Levi's

Chrome Hearts isn't a game that does things halfway. The legendary American luxury label is putting its distinctive flair for humorous extravagance to all kinds of one-off collectibles, including toy cars, toilet paper, and even familiar sneakers, as part of its Sex Records New York pop-up.

The pop-up features Chrome Hearts-customized Nike Dunks that take up a whole wall inside the new annex space, which is next to Chrome Hearts' West Village flagship.

There, you'll find a variety of high- and low-top Dunks with one-of-a-kind artwork hand-painted on each shoe. There's "SEX" branding throughout, as well as checkerboard patterns, swirly ghost things, and more.

Because this is a Chrome Hearts collaboration, all of the Dunks' metal components have been replaced with pure silver and gold, from the aglets to the dubraes to the laces-gathering pulls.

Of all, sneakerheads have been remixing sneakers for years, so this is nothing new for Dunk customisation. They've painted them, switched out the soles, and even created their own renditions of Nike's iconic designs.

As a result, not everyone finds Chrome Hearts' work to be very innovative. One commenter on HighsnobietySneakers' Instagram photo stated, "I've seen customs far better." Others agreed, saying things like "So weak" or "This is so pathetic."

Given Nike's stance on lookalikes and modifications, a firm as large as Chrome Hearts putting its silver-coated toe into the field of customized Dunk resale sounds dangerous.

Chrome Hearts' leather-patched pants, recycled from vintage Levi's, have never gotten them in trouble, so maybe it's fine when Chrome Hearts does it.

It sells the redesigned Levi's for almost $2,000 each (these Dunks are expected to sell for upwards of $3,000), so there's no way it'll hurt Nike's bottom line. Maybe there won't be any lawsuits if there isn't any competition.

Chrome Hearts has done a lot of shoe customizing in the past. It famously modified Rick Owens' Geobasket sneaker with silver appliqué and hardware, setting the way for this very expensive Dunk experiment.
