The Best Boring Sneaker Of The Year Goes To CDG Homme's Gore-Tex New Balance
The workwear-focused HOMME sub-label of COMME des GARONS — not to be confused with the experimental mainline fare of COMME des GARONS HOMME PLUS — may or may not still be led by Junya Watanabe, but given its newest footwear partnership, it definitely shares his taste.
The COMME des GARONS HOMME x New Balance 57/40, which was first seen at the brand's showcase presentation in January, is almost set to enter shops. It's as simple as it gets, which is exactly how Junya prefers it.
Many of the COMME des GARONS designer's New Balance collaborations stick to the basics, retaining the shoe's essential form but choosing for a logo here or a purposefully boring hue there.
There's nothing wrong with being simple, and Watanabe understands the power of unassumingly adaptable clothing. His seasonal collections exemplify this concept, with unfuckable basics that have been updated with superior construction and aesthetic twists (see: elevated liner jacket or ripstop paneled shirt).
HOMME's New Balance 57/40 matches that template, even though it isn't a result of Watanabe's vision (CdG stays quiet about the behind-the-scenes creatives who design its clothing). From the GORE-TEX-lined black suede top to the matching midsole, it's entirely black, with only a CdGH-branded tongue tag to break up the monotony.
In recent months, the 57/40 has had a low profile while models like the 327 and 2002r have gotten the majority of the spotlight. However, fresh colors and collaborations, such as this one, keep the chunky lifestyle sneaker in the mix.
